How It Works and Why It's Important To Deep Clean Your Equipment
When a solid burning fuel unit is used it deposits what is referred to as creosote (a dark brown oil containing various phenols and other organic compounds, distilled from coal tar and used as a wood preservative) into the exhaust system or flue.
Creosote is highly flammable and that’s why the prescribed frequency for a solid burning fuel unit is 4 months at a maximum according to the SANS guidelines Creosote works in three basic steps of hazard, the third being the most hazardous in terms of fire safety. The longer you wait to clean the system the more difficult and extensive the cleaning process becomes.

The third-stage creosote is where the creosote reaches its full hazardous potential in terms of fire safety. Ideally, your solid-burning fuel system needs to be cleaned before reaching this stage as cleaning becomes more difficult due to the creosote appearing in tar form making it highly flammable.

Stage two sees the creosote as hard black flakes with a somewhat shiny appearance. These stage two creosote flakes contain hardened tar that is not as easily cleaned as stage 1.
